BEHIND THE BOOKLoving Your DogA companion for life together

A NOTE BEFORE WE START

Your dog has a world of their own. Get to know it.

I wrote this book because I keep meeting people who love their dogs and still feel unsure. Is he eating enough? Why does she bark at the mailman? Is this limp worth a trip to the vet? Almost all of them were doing a better job than they thought. They just needed someone to explain the why and show them the how.

That’s what I’ve tried to do here, in plain language, the way I’d explain it if you were sitting at my kitchen table with your dog at your feet.

If there’s one thing I hope you’ll take from this book, it’s to get to know your dog’s everyday habits. Notice how much they usually eat and drink, how they like to lie, and how they greet you at the door. When you know what’s usual for your dog, you’ll spot a change early, often before anyone else would.

Read this book in any order you like, and keep it somewhere you can grab it quickly. And go easy on yourself. Your dog doesn’t need you to be perfect. They need you to pay attention, and the fact that you’re holding this book tells me you already do.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

So much love.
So many questions.

You’re doing your best. But affection alone doesn’t explain why the sofa becomes a chew toy, dinner is suddenly ignored, or a cuddle ends with a bite.

MEET YOUR NEW BEDSIDE COMPANION

Less second-guessing.
More getting
each other.

Each chapter explains the “why,” then the “what to do.” Small “Tonight” actions help you take the next step, and “On the leash” training plans break learning into short sessions.

OPEN THE BOOK

A better cuddle
can start with a three-second pause.

Chapter 18 explores stress, calm and consent — and a simple way to find out whether your dog wants more affection.

FROM PAGE 92 · “THE CONSENT TEST”
  1. Stroke your dog gently for about three seconds, on their chest or the side of their neck.
  2. Stop, and take your hand away.
  3. Watch what your dog does.

“If they lean in, nudge your hand or move closer, they’re saying ‘more, please.’”

One small example of the book’s approach: understand the reason, notice the signal, try a practical step.

A few things

Is this a substitute for a vet?

No. This book is educational. It helps you understand everyday care and recognise when professional help is needed. It cannot diagnose or treat your dog. Contact a vet for medical concerns or emergencies; don’t delay care to read the book.
